What Defines Me As A Daiko Drummer of Singapore Polytechnic

“Okay, let’s start from the beginning.” Someone started hitting the drum sticks against each other to count the beats. “One, two, three, go!” Sitting around in a circle, we began playing on the floor to the newly learnt beats. Running the beats in my mind, my hands struggled to coordinate with my mind. Despite my best efforts (and everyone else’s too), we never fail to miss a couple of beats here and there. Even if we had perfected the beats, there comes a new challenge: movements on the actual drums.

Though every new song brings new challenges and the training gets tougher, every one of us Daiko Drummers can never hide our excitement at learning a new song. It meant a new song for us to perform to the audience. We stretch often to prevent muscle spasms. We did our warm ups seriously as we know the consequences if it’s not done properly. Whenever we feel like giving up, we just have to look around us to see our comrades working equally as hard. Jokes were exchanged often during the grueling trainings. Laughs escapes readily from our lungs and thoughts of quitting dims immediately.

Now, I stand behind the curtains, positioned at my drum. I can hear the emcee announcing us. I took a glance at my fellow drummer beside me. I share a smile with her, as we get into the mood of the song. As the curtains parts, I looked at the audience into their eyes. I smiled and send them a message telepathically. “Look at us. We’re awesome.” When the cue is due, we started of our beats simultaneously, bringing on every sharp movement that has been drilled into our muscles. I gazed constantly at the audience. At the climax of the song, I share a glance with the drummer beside me. I know what she’s thinking. “This is what we’ve been working for.”

I post this now because I believe that this should be my last post on the club's blog. I often wondered what held us together and for me, it is the prospect of performing to the audience. SP Daiko is one of the greatest thing in my life. SP Daiko, fight on!

It's a Saturday, and Juniors are having training in our beloved clubhouse. Since the prettiest junior is unable to turn up, she decided to connect with the others through a blog post! ~~And I do not want Emily to gimme killer glares anymore!~~

ANYWAY, Chinese New Year is coming up! It's in less than a week's time!!! Daikoreans, aren't you all excited?????? I AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But don't you all get too excited! Right after that will be a week of revision week and we will be having our Semestral Exam! If you don't have exam, do click on the cross at top right hand corner, kthxbye. After the exams, prettiest junior and tiko junior will be heading to China for OITP. Following that, Fang and Xiaopick will graduate, and the rest of the juniors will be in third year and one of our VP will be heading to China! Freshies, get ready for the jaws of second year MUAHAHAHAHA. And we will get even fresher freshies! :D

Dear Daikoreans,

It has been a long time since our last proper correspondent. Now that the darn Mid Semester Test and whatnots are out of the way, I am obliged and eager to update minna-san gladly.

Do remain updated that we have 2 (TWO) upcoming events, which we require compulsory attendance for one, and hopefully complete attendance for the other. Details of which are as followed:-

1. SP Daiko Spring Cleaning (Event link)

Date: 20th December 2010 (Monday)
Time: 9.00am - 4.00pm
Officer-in-charge: Chiu Po Heng
Event overview: This event, dubbed the Annual Spring Cleaning (albeit not during spring), is organized in conjunction with Singapore Polytechnic Clean the Clubhouse Day, involving various CCAs, such as SP Japanese Daiko Drummers Facebook Spammer Club, SP Japanese Daiko Drummers Beatboxers, SP Japanese Daiko Drummers Dance Chapter, SP Japanese Daiko Drummers Acapella, SP Japanese Daiko Drummers Choir and many more. Members are encouraged to participate, especially since the event date has to be relocated should there be even 1 (ONE) member being unable to attend. Activity scope includes cleaning the clubhouse, cleaning the clubhouse, cleaning the clubhouse, cleaning the clubhouse and ultimately, cleaning the clubhouse. This shows that there are many activities planned and involved, so do expect work. In an efficient system, work input=work output. In terms of Thermodynamics, Heat supplied=Work output.

2. Christmas DAI-KON-NIA!~ (Event link)

Date: 23rd December 2010 (Thursday)
Time: 3.30am - 11.00pm (TBA)
Officer-in-charge: Tan Chee Liang
Event overview: This event is organized in conjunction with the International Christmas Celebration which attendees tends to yell "Merry Christmas!" at one another. This event is said to be semi-formal, so do dress semi-formally (eg. less than suits and ties ; more than pjs). Things to note includes BBQ, gift exchanging, games and more. (subjected to change)

All members are advised to attend both events. Should there be a need for clarification, do not hesitate to enquire as per requirement of 'malu bertanya sesak jalan'. Enquiries can be in form of comments at respective events page or, as an alternative, at the chatbox at the left sidebar. Thank you for your attention. Hope to hear from you soon.

MST IS NEARLY OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And for those without MST, do pull your hair out. This is to ensure that daikoreans' haircounts will still remain uniform :D

Speaking of which, we will then start our holiday training!! Juniors, do note that we start training this Saturday! We will be learning Masaru, right? *cross fingers* Freshies, it is almost time to complete DOH! When you guys finish learning everytime, it is time for perfection and the PERFORMANCE! Do look forward to that!!

It's a Thursday, and so, it's a training day! ~~Shhh! Don't tell people I'm blogging instead! But this is club work, so it's okay, ne? XD~~

Just a gentle reminder, if you come late for training, you have to run additional rounds. It will be added on to the basic rounds you have to run. If you're the first one late, one additional round. Second one, two additional round and so on.

Trainings starts at 9am sharp! Of course, there's grace period, of 30 seconds! :D

Freshies, hang in there and train hard! After finishing DOH, you will be ready for performances!! And then, you'll start learning spin spin spin! (I hope :P) [Note: At this point while I'm typing this, Zay Linn, Chee Heng, Jasper, Rona and Kendric are practising Takada!]

WELL! With daikoreans, everyday is worth celebrating! So let's all make the outing the awesome-est chalet EVER.

Just a reminder, there will not be any trainings this coming 3 weeks. Next training will commence after the exams, during holidays. Sad? Me too. :C But we can always meet up to air drum! As for me, I often practise whichever song we're learning in the shower, while waiting for the hair conditioner to set in X)

Responsibilities of PIC:

• Come for the rehearsal (together with 1 other friend who will also perform).
• Ensure that all performers assigned will be able to come on the day and rehearsal if required. Inform July/ any seniors immediately if anyone cannot perform on that day.
• Ensure all performers come on time and move the drums to the venue. Take note all performers must come at least 1 hour before performance and drums must be moved and stand by before the time stated by the event organizer.
• Update seniors whenever asked.

Unwanted Jeans & Buttons needed!

SP Welfare Services Club is collecting old jeans and buttons for the upcoming Heart Bazaar Project which will be held during Open House (Jan 7 - 10). The aim of this project is to raise the awareness of the environment to the students, and also to raise fund for the SP Need Funds.

The club will be making lanyards made of jeans and buttons, and they will be selling them during the bazaar.

You can help by donating your unwanted jeans/ buttons to them! It will greatly benefit the club as well as the beneficiaries.

Update on the training days during the september semester holidays:)

The training days are,
Tuesday: 9am- 3pm
Thursday: 9am-3pm

9-10am: Physical Training (PT)
10-12pm: Training (Basic)
12-1pm: Off to makan
1-3pm: Training (Songs)

Junior training will tentatively continue after yr1 training.

Hi Daikoreans:)

We are entering the 16th week of the semester.
I am sad to announce that this week would be the last training for this semester, where we would break free to study and prepare for our semestral exams.
Training will resume on the second week of September, YEAH!! ^^V
Details will be posted up here and not on facebook [because this president don't know how to use or understand it's actually applicaton] and informed though sms.
Oh well, all the best for the coming examination and....
enjoy the last training:)

All performances will stop until after exams.
Hoho! Pleased to inform that our next coming performance is on the 6th September.

Junior test this coming saturday will mark a beautiful closure for this semester training. HOHO! Jiayou la~

HEY ALL!!

Hope all ya enjoyed the gathering this evening. I truely enjoyed the spirit, fun and laugher!!:DD

First, I would like to show my outermost appreciation to the juniors for organising this gathering!! HAHA!!=D

Second, my beloved and cute freshies~ The games are so exciting!! I had so much fun:) haha!! Nvr noe tt Jun Zhe can be so open and Skyne, always so spotting:)

I really see great initiatives from everyone and I'm really touched:'( haha!!

As I had mentioned during our briefing when u guys first came down (and that's if anyone rmbs),

"Daiko widens our life circle and we can find true friends in this club:) "

Thanks to all the alumni seniors who came down, Zhi Cai, Xin Yun, Min Zhong, Claire and Shu Ling. Without them, daiko won't be wat it is today, and we won't have new drums to play.

Anyway, it was fun drumming after BBQ!!! My hands are like trembling as I typed=X HAHA!!

Dear all,

There are 10 tickets for the Natsumatsuri (summer festival) up for grabs! Pay 2 bucks each & it's yours.

Natsumatsuri is the annual summer festival organised by The Japanese Association, Singapore. In short, it's like those festivals that you see in anime and manga, except that this one is in real life. There will be lots of people in yukatas, stalls selling things from toys to takoyaki and candy apples to game stalls with the yoyo balloon catching etc. There's also the usual free uchiwa (fans), dancing and most relevant to SP Daiko will be the Daiko performance by the JAS Daiko team.

Tickets are sold in two phases, advance tickets as well as day tickets that you can buy on that day itself. The one that we are offering to SP Daiko is of the advance ticket type, which is generally highly sought after as there is not much queueing needed to get into the venue.

Date of event is 22nd August in the evening from 1730h onwards to around 2200h. Venue is at the Japanese Primary School (Changi Campus). There will be a shuttle bus service from Singapore Expo.

Those wanting to rent a yukata needs to come very early since they run out fast. Do bring adequate cash, since all the booths and stalls use cash.
